The Lipno Dam is 42 km long and 8 km wide. It lies at an altitude of 725 m a.s.l. Not far from Lipno is the Schwarzenberg Canal, an old water work of Šumava, along which a cycle path leads.
The first written mention of Horní Planá dates back to 1332. In 1349, Horní Planá was promoted to a market town by Emperor Charles IV.
It offers a unique view of Lipno, Šumava and in clear weather even the Alps, which belongs to the most beautiful in the entire area. The modern steel structure from 2021 also connects architecture with nature and makes the visit a strong experience, not just an ordinary stop on a trip.

The Mitterdorf ski resort on Mount Almberg belongs to the popular ski resorts of the Bavarian Forest and is approximately 45 km from Hotel Orsino, i.e. about 50 minutes by car. It offers groomed slopes of all difficulties, modern lifts and great conditions for families with children and beginners. There is also night skiing, a snowpark and pleasant mountain restaurants where you can relax after a day spent on the slope.
Plešné Lake belongs to the most visited places in Šumava. The moraine dam is 30–40 m high, the stone sea descends up to 150 m below the lake. The glacial cirque (kar) is recessed into the northeastern slope of the highest mountain on the Czech side of Šumava, Plechý.
Cycle paths along the water and forest paths will take you to quiet corners of Šumava. Routes for families with children as well as sportier rides.
Lipno offers great conditions for sports and recreational fishing. Permits can be purchased directly in Horní Planá.
Vítkův Hrádek is a ruin of a Gothic castle lying on the peak of the same name Vítkův kámen on the right bank of the Lipno Dam, above the village of Svatý Tomáš. It is the highest situated ruin in the Czech Republic at 1035 m.
Stožec Chapel - Chapel of the Virgin Mary - a wooden pilgrimage chapel was created in 1791 under a defunct castle, due to the healing effects of the local spring and the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary, it was sought after by pilgrims from Bohemia and nearby Bavaria
Moldaublick is a lookout tower built in 1968 in Austria on the Sulzberg mountain (1045 m a.s.l.). From the lookout tower there is a beautiful view of Horní Planá, Černá v Pošumaví, Smrčina. You can best get to Moldaublick by ferry from Horní Planá.
The Bear Trail is a significant marked tourist route in Šumava. It is 14 km long and its end points are Ovesná and Černý Kříž. It has yellow markings and number 6375.
Already in 1858, the Boubín Primeval Forest was declared a protected area and is thus the third oldest Czech nature reserve. In the past, the primeval forest used to be a heavily visited place. Every year, more than a hundred thousand visitors found their way here.
Lipno is a significant location for recreational stays by the water and sports fishing. In spring, it offers rich possibilities for fishing and hiking. Fishing has been associated with the South Bohemian region since time immemorial.
The highest peak of the Blanský Forest with a lookout tower and unique views as far as the Alps.
The Lipno Dam regularly freezes from December to March. Skating on the frozen surface is one of the most popular winter activities, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the Czech Republic, but also from abroad. A 10 km long skating track is regularly maintained in Horní Planá.
Schöneben is a vast cross-country skiing area with high snow certainty and almost daily track grooming. It is located on the border with Austria and in the vicinity of Hochficht at an altitude of about 1000 m a.s.l. In the Schöneben cross-country area, a 78 km long network of cross-country trails for classic style and skating awaits you.
The Lipno - Kramolín ski resort lies at 899 m a.s.l. It is a modern ski resort focused mainly on families with children, beginners and school ski courses. It is 28 km from Horní Planá. The main advantages are fast transport on new modern four-seater chairlifts, night skiing, ski lessons for children from 3 years old.
The Hochficht ski resort lies on the Austrian side of Šumava, it is a top ski resort 39 km from Horní Planá. Judge for yourself - 10 lifts, over 20 km of artificially snowed slopes from easy to difficult at an altitude of up to 1338 m a.s.l., and last but not least the children's Kids park, Snowpark, Boardercross and Eventarena.
It is the most beautiful sandy beach in the Lipno region. You can rent pedal boats, boats and bicycles here. Part of the area is a beach volleyball court, minigolf, petanque and bike rental. Sanitary facilities with showers and refreshments are available.
Exploring the Šumava National Park from the river surface will enhance the charm of beautiful nature. You can complete an undemanding 10-kilometer route Pěkná - Nová Pec. The section is rafted without restrictions. In the section Soumarský most - Pěkná - here the number of vessels is limited, subject to rules governed by the minimum water level of the Vltava.
Golf as such has also been associated with Šumava and its surroundings for a long time. Not far from Horní Planá there are several perfectly maintained courses that operate from spring to autumn. In the beautiful South Bohemian nature near Český Krumlov is the Svachova Lhotka golf course, on the Austrian side it is the golf course near the Bavarian Forest National Park and near České Budějovice the very famous course in Hluboká nad Vltavou.
Rides through nature on calm Hafling horses in the nearby campsite U Kukačků.
Šumava forests around Horní Planá are ideal for mushroom pickers. Clean environment and abundant occurrence of mushrooms guarantee great catches throughout the summer and autumn.
